Follow-up Comment #113, bug #44478 (project octave):

Ubuntu 14.04 and Linux Mint 17 users should either compile their own OSMesa or
avoid using OSMesa with Octave altogether. Any results you get on either of
those distributions are likely to be skewed by a broken libosmesa6 package.

I'm hoping this reduces confusion, not adds to it. This has nothing to do with
whether nvidia is used or not, I'm just noting here that OSMesa on these
distributions will not work in Octave, unless you upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04 or
Linux Mint 18 (not yet released).
