Details:

Here is an example of the dir function failing:

status=mkdir('c:/[test]');
status=mkdir('c:/[test]/abc');

#from the Octave 4.0 User Manual
#directory is subject to shell expansion if it contains any wildcard
characters ‘*’, ‘?’,
#‘[]’. To find a literal example of a wildcard character the wildcard
must be escaped
#using the backslash operator ‘\’.
dir("c:/\[test\]");
# no joy

#other interpretation of escaped wildcard
dir("c:/\x5Btest\x5D");
# no joy
