Follow-up Comment #10, bug #47974 (project octave):

Just another thought, it may be that there is a white patch which is supposed
to hide the axes.  I just did


demo polar 1
box off
set (gca, 'yaxislocation', 'zero')
set (gca, 'xaxislocation', 'zero')


and then I have a good-looking plot.
