Thanks for the bug report. I'm unable to reproduce here, and something doesn't
seem quite right. The make error message you've quoted is about the
"octave.pdf" target, but then you show a different error with the "octave.dvi"
target. Is the same error occuring for you with both texi2dvi and texi2pdf?

What is the value of the TEXINPUTS variable in Makefile? Does
/usr/local/src/octave/build/doc/interpreter/preface.texi exist?

What is makeinfo --version?
