Follow-up Comment #26, bug #48013 (project octave):

Ernst, 

This bug is about Matlab compatible Java-to-Octave conversion and the very
fact is that Matlab does not need manual conversion here.

So neither should the io package (i.e., the jOpenDocument reading function)
need to apply double() explicitly.

BTW that would be some performance hit, as double() should be applied to every
individual FLOAT cell reading (remember, spreadsheets can return very
heterogeneous cell arrays).

That said, I am a little puzzled why this only happens with jOpenDocument but
not for all the other Java-based .ods interfaces.
