Follow-up Comment #1, bug #49510 (project octave):

(Exactly which program works fine in Matlab? the code snippet you gave, or
chknmrange.m?)

What interface is reported? if you see no mention, simply run
chk_spreadsheet_support (in the io package) and report back its output (a
numeric).

I'll have a look later on, no time now.

BTW I ran your example here and got no errors (using COM interface).
I noted the warning, but that is according to the docs: the io package xlsread
won't expand the range you specify automatically. You need to specify a
sufficiently large range, maybe A55:A100 or so. If wnames is smaller, xlsread
just writes the wnames entries and won't touch the other cells within that
range - unlike Matlab which screws them up.
