Follow-up Comment #4, bug #48625 (project octave):
I think this may be an issue with how the internally bundled gfortran is
compiled; I'm hitting this on a 2010 MacBook Pro running El Capitan, Octave
4.0.3, installed from the provided .dmg. I was able to work around it as
described here:

A semi-wild guess is that the provided gfortran is compiled assuming a newer
CPU than the Core2 in this MBP.
