I checked in a change on the stable branch
(http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/3bc6e9a71d9e).  This will be a
part of the 4.2.1 bug fix release.

In general, we don't try to follow any undocumented Matlab syntax as that
could change without warning.  There's no reason not to implement
CustomDisplay, but someone would have to take an active interest and code it
up for Octave.
