Details:

The last way to check the "formatspacing" property was dropped ~2 weeks ago in
this cset by rik:
http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/f84aa17075d4

For the OF symbolic package this is a problem as there's no more way to query
the formatspacing setting after the root properties "format" and
"formatspacing" were deleted ~1.5 years ago (while these root properties still
exist and still can be queried in Matlab r2017a prerelease).

Mike especially fixed the symbolic package using the __compactformat__()
format, see bug #46671 comment 2:

IMO we do need some way to query the formatspacing property, if only for _de
facto_ Matlab compatibility, either by partly reverting:
