Follow-up Comment #2, bug #50347 (project octave):

Apologies, I remember trying 'type' when that question was first raised, I
admit I put '4.2.0' to this bug without testing 'type' this time. I raised the
bug because I didn't find another one with the description "command-line
function" here.

I can confirm 'type' works as expected (and also that 'edit' spawns a new file
with the definition), happy for this to be closed.
