@Dan: Can you see if there isn't some cruft left in your build system?  Maybe
try 


make maintainer-clean
./bootstrap
./configure
make


I ask, because the storage of graphic object properties is separate from their
eventual display.  For me, I can assign colormaps and read them back even when
the toolkit is gnuplot.
