Follow-up Comment #2, bug #51251 (project octave):
I wasn't sure initially whether to put this under matlab compatibility or a
feature request, so that's ok. but in any case I had tested before that
gca(5) does get the current axis of figure 5 in matlab with the default gca
function. You are right though that it is not documented apparently, so I'm
not sure exactly how I found out that usage. I have been using it for a while
in matlab.
