Follow-up Comment #1:
Octave is a superset of Matlab. It often has additional features, such as the
more specific end keywords like endif, endfor, etc. or the additional comment
character '#'. Although iscomplex is just ! isreal, it can sometimes make the
code clearer if the programmer can write exactly what they mean. If the
programmer wants to test whether a variable is complex it doesn't hurt to have
a function specifically for that.
