Follow-up Comment #3:

On my computer (linnux mint 17.3) I can reproduce the issue with Octave 4.0
but not in the latest 4.2.1 release or dev. 
The synchronization between threads has been improved before 4.2 (by queuing
thread operations when printing) and that bug is probably fixed.
