Follow-up Comment #21, bug #39692 (project octave): Matlab seems to produce compatible output from the pictures posted to the Octave-Maintainers mailing list. One thing I noticed was that the lines and tick marks for the axes are always in front of the text object. I don't know if we need to try and copy that behavior or not. It might relate to the "layer" property of the axes. But if the "layer" is set to bottom, then the text object should obscure the axes object.
