Follow-up Comment #3, bug #52287 (project octave):

Weirdly, it looks to me like the Matlab table of TeX characters is showing º
(U+00BA MASCULINE ORDINAL INDICATOR) for \circ. But I guess they intended that
to be ° (U+00B0 DEGREE SIGN)?

By the way, on https://www.johndcook.com/blog/math_symbols/ it's easy to miss
but it looks like he is saying that "^\circ" is mapped to °, notice the
superscript carat for that one case.

Running "\circ" through plain tex, I get a non-superscripted ∘ (U+2218 RING
OPERATOR).
