Details:
It would be very beneficial if all instances of a selected variable could be
highlighted in the editor. I've found this a very useful feature I rely on in
the Matlab and Notepad++ editors. It helps to know where else in the code a
variable is used (or not used due to mis-spelling). Notepad++ highlights all
variables of the same name, whereas Matlab does scoped highlighting. I've
found both to be useful in different ways, either to limit highlighting to a
given code scope, or to see all places a phrase or variable by the same name
is used in any scope or in comments. I'd be happy if either method were
implemented (and happiest if both were implemetned with an option to toggle
between methods).
Another very useful extension to variable highlighting is if a colored marker
is placed by the scrollbar to show where instances occur in the whole
document, not just where they are visible in the current view. Matlab does
this and I have an addon in Notepad++ to do this (and used to have an addon in
firefox that did the same on ctl-f on searches).
