Follow-up Comment #4:

I applied the patch on stable and pulled it through to default.  I think it is
good enough for now so I'll close the report.

Incidentally, looking through the code made me realize there were a lot of
instances where choosing the correct quotation symbol, single quote in this
case, would really simplify the code because there wouldn't be a whole lot of
backslash escapes cluttering everything.  I made a lot of changes in
__gnuplot_draw_axes__.m so you are going to want to pull from Mercurial soon.
