Yeah, I like that plan too.  Could I work on this through the evening still? 
I found one sort of related bug here:

and I'm slowly commenting out code hunks to find this cntrl-C error.  Minor,
non-structural bugs are easy to find and fix, but control signal types of bugs
aren't.
