Follow-up Comment #2, bug #53285 (project octave):

I built a new version today even with a make distclean.

New information is that Octave behaves correctly under ./run-octave

The installed version gives this error.  

I do not remember the last time this worked correctly though.  There is no
other information except dozens of lines of those errors.  I tried to track
this down but was not sure where ishghandle is defined.
