Follow-up Comment #9, bug #53305 (project octave): Even though 1.8u172 is out, you might not want to use that one as the standard installation. Oracle releases two JDK releases at the same time: a Critical Patch Update ("CPU") and Patch Set Update ("PSU"). It's not documented on the download page, but I think u171 is the CPU and u172 is the PSU. Oracle recommends that most users stick with the CPU.
