Follow-up Comment #9, bug #54260 (project octave): I think the build-time logic of 32-bit vs 64-bit indexing integers might also be solved by simply using OCTAVE_ENABLE_64 from the public API as a replacement for the old USE_64_BIT_IDX_T, does that look right?
