Follow-up Comment #2, bug #54527 (project octave):
It's both about the dimensions and about the vertcat operation.
With horzcat, there is no crash
>> [sparse(1), (1:0)']
error: =: nonconformant arguments (op1 is 1x1, op2 is 0x1)
>> horzcat (sparse(1), (1:0)')
error: horzcat: =: nonconformant arguments (op1 is 1x1, op2 is 0x1)
