Follow-up Comment #26, bug #50466 (project octave):

For what it's worth, the 'xlim' error is exactly the problem I was getting
when I simply reversed the order of adopt() and xset().  I fixed it in the C++
by also eliminating a call to update_limits().  

On the positive side, if there is no workaround then I think we have to patch
core Octave before the 5.0 release.
