Follow-up Comment #18:

I cherrypicked a few of the "dead assignment" warnings that I could easily fix
and did that here https://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/f8d380d04b01.

There may still be a few things in the clang report that could be fixed, but
they are buried under thousands of false positives.  I think we have made
enough progress on this report for the 5.0 release so I am going to close it
and mark the task done at https://wiki.octave.org/5.0.0_Release_Checklist.
