Follow-up Comment #15, bug #53695 (project octave):

Here's a patch that takes Sebastian's approach and adds BSD tar detection and
support to both tar() and unpack(): file #46054:  tar-support-BSD-tar.patch

After this, it works on my Macs when either BSD or GNU tar is on the path as
"tar". Tests for tar, untar, and unpack all pass.

This patch was made against stable.
