Follow-up Comment #9, bug #55725 (project octave): I don't think that Octave's "system" does some kind conversion between single and double quotes (and I really think it shouldn't). The following command from the Octave prompt also creates two folder: system("mkdir 'a b'") Storing 8.3 names in the file system (NTFS) is optional. So we shouldn't rely on that mechanic. But I agree that your code would work as a workaround in the majority of cases.
