Follow-up Comment #27, bug #43651 (project octave):

So, the t1_matlab.pdf is actually a postscript file; the
t1_matlab_differentPlotCommand.pdf is a pdf, but it does not use
calibri fonts, but "Helvetica" which is also not embedded 
and rendering will be different on different computers.

Also looking on screenshot it is obvious that matlab fakes
diameter symbol as letter Ø (the diameter should be a perfect circle not an
ellipse). I guess octave can go the same route 
and substitute \0 with Ø (I would argue that low-case would look better)
which would display with large(-er) selection  of fonts.
