Update of bug #56097 (project octave): Status: None => Need Info _______________________________________________________ Follow-up Comment #2: Try starting Octave without reading any configuration files with the -f option like so octave-5.1.0 -f --gui I expect there will still be a problem. You mention that this is a self-compiled version of Octave. It is possible that you didn't have all the dependencies necessary to create a fully functional version of Octave at the time of the build. configure will warn about not building the documentation, but doesn't stop you from building an executable. If you configure with something like ./configure --options >& myconfig.log then you can inspect the results.
