Follow-up Comment #30:

Revisiting the logic for freeing graphics objects, I believe I broke it with
the previous changes in this bug report.
I pushed a patch here that hopefully fixes it on default:

But I still think it needs some more revisiting.

With this change, closing the original example takes 0.9 seconds on my PC
(compared to about 10 milliseconds with the broken "fix"). But I think we were
leaking graphics objects massively.
Compared to the original 10 seconds, this is still an improvement.

Since the changes here have been grafted to stable, we probably should fix it
there, too.
Re-opening as in progress.
