Thanks for this clarification, jwe.  I skimmed through the Wikipedia and
confirms, that NVIDIA's propriatry driver seems not use Mesa and has it's own
implementation of the OpenGL interface. As jwe says this switch is useful, if
you use the free nouveau NVIDIA driver based on Mesa or some other Mesa based
driver.

@Yuri: To come back to the topic, what is your graphic card?  For example for
me:


$ sudo lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Skylake GT2 [HD Graphics
520] (rev 07)


And sorry I missed the nuance in comment #4.  Does


graphics_toolkit ("qt")
graphics_toolkit ("gnuplot") 


work for both examples?
