Follow-up Comment #60:

I did a bit more cleanup--wrapping long lines to 80 columns if possible,
replacing C comparison to NULL with C++ comparison to nullptr, dropping FIXME
note about static function--and checked things in here

I'm marking as Ready for Test since it's just possible that the change to
compare to nullptr would make a difference, even though it is the "right"
thing to do.
