Follow-up Comment #3, bug #44282 (project octave):
It seems that GUIDE is now deprecated in Matlab:
https://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab/creating_guis/about-the-simple-guide-gui-example.html
so, good news, one less thing to worry about, and, bad news, there is now App
Designer!
Implementing a compatible gui_mainfcn.m is a much more achievable goal.
