"16 colors a terminal can use"- I suppose you refer to the output of terminal
*programs* like gcc, rather than "a" terminal?
The GUI command pane has much more than 16 colors available for back- and
foreground and more. e.g., I usually set the GUI command pane background to
light yellow.
