Follow-up Comment #1:

Because Octave did not create the file it is unlikely to load correctly.  But,
as you point out this shouldn't, cause an error.  Working with the development
branch of Octave where I have debugging symbols the file loads.  However, the
very next command, whatever it is, causes a segfault.  The backtrace doesn't
show anything related to hdf5 which I think indicates that the H5Dread routine
itself is causing memory corruption.
