Follow-up Comment #18, bug #58323 (project octave):

Here is the output in the command window when replacing the "error" from
comment #16 with keyboard:

>> a = 5
b = 1
a
keyboard
3
b

a =

     5


b =

     1


a =

     5

K>> dbcont

ans =

     3


b =

     1


The "dbcont" that I typed at the prompt is shown after the command block in
the history and is not part of the group.

So it looks like they really just do "disp, history, eval" (or "history, disp,
eval") and let the interpreter continue from there.
