Follow-up Comment #23:

I pushed the following changeset to stable and merged with default:

Marking ready for test, but close if you agree this is fixed, at least well
enough for now, and for the release.  I assume this will also fix the random
crashing problems we've been seeing with generating figures for the manual,
but I guess only time will tell.
