Follow-up Comment #12, bug #58830 (project octave):

I think the proposed solution is a good one. For reference, Matlab 2020a also
behaves in a similar way. So, if X is undefined, X(1:10) produces an error
about an undefined function or variable", but X(1:end) complains about the use
of "end".
