OK Thanks for explaining this Markus. I'm currently consulting with my distro
about the choice of the blas implementation at
https://discourse.nixos.org/t/openblas-vs-reference-blas-implementation/9086 .
TBH, I feel rather confident, since we use Nix, to put 64bit indexing into
production, as the ecosystem makes it easy to debug why issues occur. 64 bit
is the future, and Nix is there too. 

For the record, Intel MKL BLAS is not free software and hence it cannot be
used for packaging Octave for NixOS.
