Follow-up Comment #4, bug #59228 (project octave): invoking interpreter::shutdown solves the problem for this particular example, but I have a larger piece of code where that seems to not be sufficient. The crash seems to depend on what command is run in the interpreter before shutdown and also it appears to be random, i.e., it occurs about 30% of the times the code is run.
