Details:

Running Octave 5.2.0 on CentOS Linux 6.10. Downloaded and installed Octave
using GUIX. Running Octave with the --force-gui option.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open Octave (with --force-gui), and open the Preferences GUI (Edit -->
Preferences).
2. Select the "Command" tab, change Font size from 10 (default) to 11.
3. Click "Apply", then "Ok". Note that the text in the command window is
larger.
4. Close Octave (type "exit", then Enter).
5. Restart Octave (with --force-gui). Note that text in the command window is
back to font size 10.
6. Open the Preferences GUI, select the "Command" tab. Note that Font size is
10.

Debugging attempts:
Deleted the qt-settings file from ~/.config/octave. Confirmed that Octave
regenerates the qt-settings file when Octave is launched. Did not correct the
problem. The freshly created file is attached as "qt-settings-default". The
modified file (copied while Octave is still open, but after the Preferences
GUI has been closed) is attached as "qt-settings-modifier". The overwritten
file (copied just after Octave is restarted) is attached as
"qt-settings-restarted".

Note:
It looks like another user reported the same bug using Octave 5.2.0 on
Windows: https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?58400. If this is the same bug, it may
be operating system independent.
