I checked in a fix for bug #59709 here:
http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/b2d5ee958d7f.  This will be part
of the 6.1.1 bug fix release for Octave and will address this issue.  If you
want, you can download the m-file from the Octave Mercurial repository and
swap it for the existing one in your installation to see the change.
