Follow-up Comment #17, bug #34173 (project octave):
I like that Octave has additional features beyond Matlab. And because this is
already coded, I wouldn't discard it. In this case, we are no worse than
Matlab. Matlab *always* uses full matrices for permutation matrices while
Octave occasionally uses full matrices (for example when unary minus operator
is applied), but lots of times can use the reduced memory implementation.
