Follow-up Comment #2, bug #59999 (project octave):

Ah! Someone encounters the same behavior I did, except I didn't know it was a
bug. I worked around with


subplot ("Position", [1e-3 1e-3 0.999 0.999]);


which can at least give you usable figures if you use it for work, while the
behavior is being worked on....
