Follow-up Comment #9, bug #60818 (project octave):

based on the timing, and the likelihood that 2d and 3d will be the most
heavily used, I'd recommend we keep both 2D and 3D broken out as vector based
determinants (with the cross() and dot(cross...) respectively.  

then just to make sure the <tol function is consistent
