Follow-up Comment #9:

The problem for the impulse response would be much harder to solve. The
impulse response requires the discretization of the system in tf-form.
Although the discretizaiton itself is done in state space representation,
computing the tf from the discretized system can not be done with sufficient
accuracy for very high order systems. This effect can also be seen in other
tools, see comment #5.

Closing this report since the original issues with lsim() and step() are
fixed.
