Follow-up Comment #4, bug #60984 (project octave): @jwe: I wonder, then, whether the issue is that we are doing a lot of character-by-character processing versus line-oriented processing (I'm thinking of finding a 'CR' and then having to either peek() or getc()/ungetc() to check whether it is followed by a 'LF'.
