Follow-up Comment #3, bug #61129 (project octave):

I would say yes, the performance is worth the additional code. 

Consider also my attached version: it is about the same amount of additional
code, potentially slightly faster (only one invocation of primes), and perhaps
logically easier to understand, as the same algorithm is used in two stages.
