Follow-up Comment #16:

@Pantxo: The changes I made were approximately 3 years ago.  At the time, I
don't think Matlab even had an axes property "xlimitmethod".  Looking at my
own comments, I think Matlab used to switch "xlimmode" to manual when "axis
tight" was given and Octave copied that.  I think it is fine to make Octave
compatible with current Matlab behavior.

I tested "xlimitmethod" property with the three values "xtickaligned",
"tight", "padded" and they work for me.
