%APPDATA% on Windows). The default value may be overridden by the environment
variable OCTAVE_HISTFILE. 

It looks like MacOS isn't following the XDG Base Directory Specification [1].
And the fallback directory is used.

Does it print any errors if you execute `history -w`?
